Royal Publishing Co., Philadelphia
Frederick C. Kerner and John R. Getts worked together in the "book
business" as early as 1900. The Kerner & Getts Jobbing-Publishing
Company was incorporated in 1904. The partners were Frederick C.
Kerner, John R. Getts and William Getts. Kerner and Getts were also the
owners of the Royal Publishing Company until Kerner's death in 1911
which left Getts in charge.
The business was at 530 Locust at least between 1900 and
1914. By 1916 the Royal Publishing Company was located at 425 Locust
Street.
The Royal Publishing Company published a number of
paperback series as well as postcards. One of those series, printed in
the mid teens, was the Royal Series. This series contained more than
140 books. Number 116 was T. S. Arthur's Ten Nights in a Bar Room.
There are no illustrations within this book. It is 7" x 5". The identity of the man pictured on the cover is unknown to me.
The title page notes that the book is "founded on the play
of the same name". This is, of course, incorrect. The play was adapted
from the book.
