J. S. Ogilvie & Co., New York 1868-1893
J. S. Ogilvie Publishing Company, New York (1894-ca.1919)
This firm published two T. S. Arthur books.
Window-Curtains (also published as “Me”). First edition
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room
The first book edition of Window-Curtains was published in two
formats
in 1880. The contents of this book had previously been published in
1874 in Arthur’s Illustrated Home Magazine.
The hardcover cloth edition was not part of a series.
12 mos., 288 page in cloth. $1.00. It was published for several years
thereafter.
Also in 1880 this title was #11 in the Sunday Library Series. It cost
20 cents.
Although ads note that this series is a paperbound series, the book
below is definitely clothbound.
In 1886 Ogilvie was publishing its "Popular Reading Books". #35
contained Window-Curtains as well as several other stories. It was a
paperback and sold for 30 cents.
Subsequently Ogilvie published Window-Curtains as "Me".
The book below was published in 1887 as "Me, or the Story of the Window
Curtains".
It was first published in May, 1887 as #25 in the Fireside Series. The
books of this series were published in cloth as well as in wraps.
In 1889 it was #78 in the Favorite Edition Series. This is a 12 mo.
cloth book that sold for $1.00.
In 1889 this title was published as #100 in the Surprise Series. This
series of paperbacks cost 25 cents.
"Me" by a well known author was advertised as a companion to “She".
"She" was written by H. Rider Haggard. Haggard's 1887 book is an
adventure story about a lost kingdom in Africa. There is no
relationship between the two books except that they were published by
the same company. Perhaps the publisher’s connection to Haggard’s book
was an advertising ploy by Ogilvie to buoy Me's sales.
In 1881 Window Curtains is listed as #28 in the People's Library. This
paper back book cost 20 cents. This series was reprinted for a number
of years. By 1889 #402 “Me” was also included in this library.
It was published in a Non Series format for 25 cents in 1896. This was
in a large unrelated group of paper back books "Popular Books in Paper
Covers".
=======
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room was published in a number of formats by
this
publisher. All of the book are reprints.
The volumes that I have seen have no internal illustrations. The Sunset
Series book does have a line drawn illustration on the front cover.
(See below.)
The Sunset Series is a large multivolume multiauthored
paperbound
series. It was started in 1902 and published for a number of years
thereafter. Ten Nights in a Bar Room is #214. 25 cents.
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room was published in the Peerless Series
as #101 in October, 1896. It was a combination which included The
Devil's Chain by Edward Jenkins.
The Peerless was a multivolume, multiauthored publisher’s series.
Popular Books bound in Paper Cover in 1899-1901. Apparently different
from the Sunset Series.
A "Religious Books" heading in catalogues note Ten Nights in a Bar
Room. It is paperback and cost 25 cents. This may be part of the Sunset
Series.
Our New Play Books is a series. This set of books includes titles that
were currently being performed as plays around the country. They are
paperback and cost 25 cents. This series began in 1905
(Interestingly later this series included books that had been made into
”moving pictures”)
Ten Nights in a Bar Room is #42 of the Clarendon Edition. This
is a
series of 12 mo. clothbound books.
The date of publication of this series is unknown but appears to be in
the early 1890’s. This is a very scarce series and the reprint titles
are not well known. It is presumed that the books of this series had
dust jackets.
This volume includes the book "The Devil's Chain".
