James Miller, New York
James Miller was an active publisher between 1859 and 1883. He
succeeded the retiring C. S Francis with this namesake publisher.
Miller's firm was succeeded by Thomas R. Knox and Company in 1883.
James Miller was one of the first houses that published books in boxed
sets. It concentrated on juvenile books.
In 1868 Miller sold most of its juvenile title plates to the Allen
Brothers publishing house. Thereafter Miller concentrated on gift
books.
James Miller died in 1883 at the age of 61.
The James Miller publishing firm printed one T. S. Arthur book. In 1876
it released All for the Best; or, The Old Peppermint Man. It is a
reprint. This book is in brown cloth with an embossed picture on the
cover and gold gilt lettering and an illustration on the spine. 6.25" x
5.25". There are numerous illustrations within the book.
Note that the cover illustration was also used in other Miller
published Edgeworth books.
This book is noted as title number one in Edgeworth's Popular Library.
