F. M. Lupton Publishing Co., New York
The F. M. Lupton Publishing Company was one of a myriad of houses
that published numerous reprints of older works in a multitude of
series. These series were distinguished from each other by
different decorative covers. Lupton published series both in
paperback and hardcover. Most of the hardcover series contained
reprints of popular works. Among the titles and authors were Alice
in Wonderland, Doyle's A Study in Scarlet, reprints of Charles
Dickens, Henty and Shakespeare.
Despite frequent listings to the contrary, all of Lupton's non
paperbacks were issued in boxes or in dust jackets. So it is safe
to snicker at those dealers who note in their ads: "No jacket as
issued”.
In 1902 this company was succeeded by the Federal Book Company.

This firm published four titles with T. S. Arthur noted as the
author.
All are included in various publisher’s series. None were printed
in non-series form.
Little Savoyard
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room
Adventures by Land and Sea
Perils by Sea and Land
The latter two volumes were not actually written by T. S. Arthur.
The adventurous content of these stories is unlike anything Arthur
ever wrote.
Previously Worthington published these titles with T. S. Arthur
also named as the author. But note:
The exact content of "Adventures by Land and Sea" was first
published in America by Willis P. Hazard (copyright 1853) in "The
Narratives of an Old Traveller" translated from the German of Dr.
Ph. H. Knelb by a Lady.
All of the content of Perils by Land and Sea was first published
in America as "Perilous Incidents in The Lives of Sailors and
Travellers" translated from the German of Dr. Ph. H. Knelb by a
Lady. Willis P. Hazard copyrighted this book in 1853.
How these titles came to have T. S. Arthur as the purported author
in books published by Worthington and F. M. Lupton is unclear.
Perhaps it was a way to enhance sales.
Little Savoyard is a reprint of Idle Hands, and Other Stories
published by Porter and Coates in 1871. As of this time most of
the content (stories) of these volumes is known to have been
previously published in earlier Arthur works.
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room is of course a reprint. It has the Edith
Foote Upham illustrations.
All the cloth bound Lupton series books originally had dust
jackets. The series and covers will be supplemented as more
information is obtained. Some of the covers below are
representative of the series but are not T. S. Arthur books.
