Lindsay and Blakiston, Philadelphia
Robert Lindsay worked for several printing and bookbinding firms in
Philadelphia between 1819 and 1829. In that latter year he became a
managing partner in the bookbinding firm of De Silver, Herse &
Lindsay. At the time it was the largest bookbinding firm in the United
States. In 1843 he formed a co-partnershp with Presley Blakiston
(1813-1898). This house was involved in bookbinding, publishing and
bookselling. He remained with this firm until his retirement in 1882.
Presley Blakiston worked for a book auction firm as well as several
publishing houses prior to joining Blakiston. These included Carey and
Lea, Carey, Lea and Carey and Carey, Lea and Blanchard. This may
explain the earlier Carey, Lea and Blanchard Arthur books being
reprinted by this firm.
Lindsay and Blakiston published six T. S. Arthur authored books. Three
were published in 1844 and are reprints. The three books have the same
blindstamped embossed pattern on the cover.
