Hubbard & Burgess, New York

This firm established a publishing business in about 1858 at 135 William Street in New York. It incorporated and became Hubbard, Burgess & Co. toward the end of 1860 and moved to 78 Reade & 99 Church Streets. Walton Burgess (1833-1890) was the son of publisher Daniel Burgess. There is no evidence that this firm published books before 1859 or after 1861. In 1862 Hubbard, Burgess was noted to be jobbers of hats, furs, straw goods, umbrellas, school and miscellaneous books.

After the dissolution of this house, Burgess joined Collins and Brother, another New York publisher.

Hubbard & Burgess published T. S. Arthur's six book series: Tales for the Rich and Poor. This series had previously been published by Baker & Scribner (first editions of all six titles), Charles Scribner, Wm. Holdredge , R.T. Young and J. M. Fairchild & Co. Later it was published by Collins & Brother.

Thus, the Hubbard & Burgess books are not first editions.
