D. Appleton & Co., New York
This firm published only one T. S. Arthur title: Tired of
Housekeeping. It is a first edition.
The little 167 page volume was published within two different Appleton
series.
The first edition was certainly part of the "Tales for the
People and Their Children Series". This multivolume series was started
in 1841. Arthur’s book was copyrighted in 1842 but the first edition
has an 1843 title page.
It is unclear whether or not this Arthur title was placed
in the "Cheap Common School Library Series" at the same time it became
part of the "Tales for the People and Their Children”. Thus, making
either copy a “first edition”.
Editions were published in many different years during
this series’ run. (1843, 1844, 1846, 1847, 1849 and 1859 are known) A
number of the books are undated with the 200 Broadway address. D.
Appleton & Co. was at 200 Broadway between 1839 and 1854.
This series was published as late as 1870.
