Henry F. Anners, Philadelphia

This company appears to have been in the publishing business from at least 1818 to 1856. In the early years it published prayer books. For three years (1836-1839) Anners published with Thomas T. Ash as Thomas T. Ash & Henry F. Anners. Anners was located at 48 North Fourth Street and 141 Chesnut Street.

This firm published reprints of numerous T. S. Arthur titles. Most of these books were previously published by E. Ferrett and Company, Samuel Colman and John Allen. All of the Anners' Arthur volumes were published between 1847 and 1853.

Anners also published several first editions.
Anners first editions:
  Young Music Teacher 1847
Two probable first editions are
-Improving Stories for the Young 1847
-Stories for My Young Friends 1847

The classic reference of Lyle H. Wright noted that Anners' Madeline is also a first edition. This is incorrect. The five stories that appear in the Anners' edition were first published in "The Club Room" by E. Ferrett & Co. in 1845.

Beginning in 1847 Anners published nine T. S. Arthur books in a uniform edition. These volumes were muslin in various colors. Blindstamped with gold gilt decorations and lettering on the spine. 6.25" x 4". Each book cost 42 cents.

The Young Music Teacher is a first edition. Lady at Home: or, Leaves from the Everyday Book of an American Woman was previously published by John Allen with the Mary Elmwood pseudonym.
