John Allen and Co., Boston/New York
John Allen began in the book selling business in Boston in 1832 with
William D. Ticknor. He published on his own imprint, John Allen earlier
in 1832 and thereafter in 1833 and 1834 as Allen & Ticknor. Later
he and Ticknor took over the publishing business of Carter and Hendee.
Ticknor left the partnership in 1835 and Allen established his own
firm, John Allen and Company. He moved to New York in 1837 and remained
in business as John Allen for about a decade thereafter.

This book is noted in a July 19, 1844 advertisement by John Allen in
the New York Tribune. It states it is by the author of "The Stolen
Wife" and the "Seamstress". Both of the latter titles were written by
Arthur and published by R. G. Berford in 1843.
This exact title is not recorded anywhere as an Arthur book. Its existence therefore is not a certainty.
