Claxton, Remsen, & Haffelfinger, Philadelphia
Edmund Claxton, George Remsen, and Charles C. Haffelfinger
previously of the publishing house of Grigg, Elliott and Company and
most recently of the firm J. B. Lippincott & Company announced in
February, 1868 the formation of their new publishing company, Claxton,
Remsen & Haffelfinger.
This firm published three different T. S. Arthur series. All had
previously been been published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. and
Lippincott, Grambo & Co. The early books published in 1868 by this
firm have the CRH emblem on the front cover but a J. B. Lippincott
& Co. title page.
None of this publisher's Arthur books are first editions.
In 1880 this firm was succeeded by E. Claxton & Co. and the
Arthur's Series were reprinted by that company.
Arthur's Library for the Household is a twelve book series but
also was
published as a six volume set (Arthur's Household Library) in which
each book had two titles from the larger series. It was sold as a boxed
set initially for $5.40 and later for as much as $9.00. It appears this
firm started initially publishing this set around 1868.
Known editions also were published in 1869 and 1874.
