T. Ellwood Zell, Philadelphia
Hayes & Zell, Philadelphia
T. Ellwood Zell (1828-1905) was a Philadelphia publisher. Zell
entered the publishing business in 1854 when he bought out the Troutman
interest in Troutman & Hayes (In 1852 this latter firm was an
employer of John Wanamaker.) Hayes & Zell were in business until
1860 when Zell bought out Hayes. In 1861 Zell took over the publishing
of the “Friends’ Intelligencer”. The firm was active to 1895. In the
1880’s it was well known as a major subscription house. Religious
books, atlases, Bibles and encyclopedias were mainstays.
In addition to his publishing efforts Zell founded the community of
Zellwood as well as the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the
United States (MOLLUS).
These firms published one T. S Arthur title: Guardian Angel. It was
part of the six volume Childrens' Gems Series.
It was published by T. Ellwood Zell in 1864 and by Hayes & Zell
prior to 1860.
I am not certain about the format of the Hayes & Zell copy but the
T. Ellwood Zell title was published in three different formats:
Three Formats:
Paper. 5.5" x 4.5"
Boards
Cloth with gilt lettering.
I have not seen the Arthur book but here is another title from the
series. This is the paper bound edition.
