Siegel-Cooper Co., Chicago, New York
This company was a department store that opened in Chicago in 1887.
It was founded by Henry Siegel, Frank H/ Cooper and Isaac Keim. In 1897
a large branch store ("The Largest Store in the World") was opened in
New York City. The book department was initially managed by E. A.
Lawson. Lawson had formerly managed the book and Stationary department
of Siegel-Cooper in Chicago. He had also been a partner in the firm of
E. A. Weeks & Co.
The New York store published a monthly literally magazine "Book Notes" beginning in July,1898
There is evidence that this firm published two books that were written by T. S. Arthur.
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room
Friends and Neighbors
Siegel-Cooper undoubtedly published the Arthur reprints in
its publisher’s series. Interestingly the cover of one of the series
(left)) is the same as a Lawson publication and the book on the right
has the same cover format as a pre-1902 Mershon Company book.
The imprints of both of these books note Chicago and New York. Thus, they were published in 1897 or later.
I do not know which of the Siegel-Cooper series had Arthur
titles. I am showing these two because I suspect that at least Ten
Nights in a Bar-Room was published in these formats.
