Charles Scribner, New York

The firm Baker & Scribner was in business between 1846 and 1850. Charles Scribner and Isaac Baker established their publishing firm in New York City at 145 Nassau Street. Isaac Baker died in 1850 and in 1851 Charles Scribner continued the firm under the name of Charles Scribner until 1864 when it morphed into Charles Scribner and Company.

Charles Scribner published a number of T. S. Arthur authored titles. Most were reprints of previous Baker & Scribner publications but there we’re a few first editions. Books from the Baker & Scribner Rich and Poor (RP) Series are noted below.

Old Man's Bride 1853 copyright and title page date. The contents of this book were first published serially beginning in October, 1852 in Arthur’s Home Magazine.

This six title series was first published by Baker & Scribner. The books were reprinted by Charles Scribner in 1851, 1852, and 1853. The 1851 books note "Tales for the Rich and Poor" on the front cover

This book is blindstamped with gold gilt decorations on the spine.

The 1851 Brilliant was an exact reprint of the earlier 1850 Baker and Scribner edition of this T. S. Arthur edited book.
