Saalfield Publishing Company, Akron
This firm was established in 1900 by Arthur J. Saalfield, formerly
of the Werner Company. Saalfield was born in Leeds, England in 1863.
At an early age he worked with W. B. Keene, Cook & Company, a large
bookseller. By 1877 he was employed by Dillingham in New York.
He went into a jobbing business with Albert F. Fitch in 1891. This
business was a failure. Sometime thereafter moved to Akron (after a
short term stint as the manager of the Merriam Company) to take over
the publishing business of the Werner Company. Subsequently he
purchased the company and began the Saalfield Publishing Company. By
1902 Saalfield had a satellite offices in New York and Chicago.
Saalfield’s most famous output was the Billy Whiskers' Series. The
company was in business until 1977. Saalfield died in 1919.
Saalfield only published one T. S. Arthur title: Ten Nights in a Bar
Room.
At this time I am aware of two different formats.
