The book publisher N. C. Nafis (Nehemiah C.) was active as a bookseller as early as 1831 and a publisher from about 1833 at 98 Catharine Street (NYC).

Charles S. Cornish (1821-1891) was a native of Lexington, New York. He apprenticed with the book business of Nafis in New York City, married Nafis’ daughter and subsequently became a partner in the business. Nafis died in 1851.

Hiram H. Lamport and Charles S. Cornish established Cornish, Lamport and Co. in 1850. It succeeded Nafis & Cornish and in June, 1853 it dissolved and was succeeded by Lamport, Blakeman and Law.

These companies published several gift books that were edited by T. S. Arthur.
