Hubbard Brothers, Philadelphia

Alfred H. Hubbard and Frank W. Judd established the Hubbard Brothers in 1868. This firm acted as a subscription publishing house but also was a well known Bible publisher. It printed early editions of Palmer Cox’s books as well as some Mark Twain titles. It was renamed the Hubbard Publishing Company in 1893. Although its main office was in Philadelphia, it had branch offices in many cities across the United States. Note the advertising covers below.

This firm published one T. S. Arthur first edition: Strong Drink; The Curse and Cure. It was copyrighted in 1877. 676 pages.
This book has two parts. Part I is titled "What Shall We Do to be Saved from the Demon of Drink?". Part II is "The Curse and the Cure".

The frontispiece is a portrait of T. S. Arthur. Part I has five line drawn illustrations. There are no illustrations in Part II.

Later the second part of the book was renamed and published as "Grappling with the Monster".

This book has an 1878 inscription. I do not know if there is an earlier edition.

Hubbard Brothers published an edition of Ten Nights in a Bar-Room not in the series/sets noted below.

Two six title sets were published in the late 1880’s-early 1890’s.

Hubbard published a large multivolume, multi-authored Edgewood Edition beginning in 1888. The cover notes "Edgewood Edition" and has a Hubbard Brothers Logo. Within this series there were twelve T. S. Arthur reprints.

Later the same cover without the "Edgewood Edition" was published by John W. Lovell Company and the Cottage Library Publishing House. The Edgewood Publishing Company published Arthur books with the exact same cover. The relationship between the Edgewood Publishing House and the Hubbard Brothers is unknown but Alfred W. Hubbard was the manager of this firm. Edgewood most likely was a subsidiary or wholly owned by Hubbard.

Edgewood Edition of Popular 12 mos. is a large series.
