Elias Howe, Boston

(This Howe is not to be confused with the Sewing machine inventor Howe)

Elias Howe, Jr. (1820-1895) established his publishing company in 1842. His greatest publishing successes were sheet music collections and instruction books for the violin. The firm was located at 9 Cornhill in Boston. He sold his complete catalogue to Oliver Ditson in 1850. After his non-compete expired in 1860 he returned to the publishing world with more music related books.

Howe published two T. S. Arthur titles. Both are first editions and copyrighted in 1847.

Advice to Young Men on Their Duties and Conduct in Life.
-The first edition has 1847 on the title page. It was co-published with J. W. Moore, Philadelphia. There is a second 1847 title page edition which does not note the co-publisher.

Advice to Young Ladies on Their Duties and Conduct in Life

I do not know whether the first edition of Advice to Young Ladies has an 1847 or 1848 title page.
