W. H. Harrison, Jr., Chicago

Before moving to Chicago in 1885 to establish his publishing business, W. R. Harrison, Jr. was a partner in Toledo, Iowa in the Harrison & Smith firm. Little else is known about Harrison. There is no evidence that Harrison published any books after 1890.

This firm published T. S. Arthur titles in the exact same style as a format of John E. Potter & Co. Arthur’s. Potter published 33 titles in this format. So far I have only seen one Harrison Arthur but it is very likely all 33 were published.

The book below has an inscription of October, 1887 and has a Potter copyright notice. Thus it dates from 1887 or before. It is likely that Potter had a business arrangement with Harrison regarding the publication and sales of the Arthur titles.

Only one format has been seen. Cloth. Brown seen. Gold gilt lettering and illustrations/decorations. 7.5” x 5.25”.
(Note this format has been seen with Arthur titles published by John E. Potter & Co. (as noted above) and later editions by The Keystone Publishing Co. in 1889/1890 and the Holiday Publishing Co. in 1890.
