Gottwals & McDonough, Cleveland
Not much is known about this publisher. Samuel Gottwals and John
McDonough were the named partners. Old directories and ads put the firm
in Albany in 1869 (as Gottwals & M’Donough), Columbus in 1874 and
Chicago in 1876. One imprint lists a Pittsburgh location.
This firm was noted to be in Cleveland in the mid-late 1880’s.
It appears that Gottwals & McDonough only published one
T. S. Arthur book: Ten Nights in a Bar Room. Two formats have been
noted and both show Cleveland on the title page. These books were
printed by The Press of John E. Potter and Company. One of the two
books has Potter book advertisements in the back.
No priority between the two books is known. Based on the
cover formats one would assume that the earlier book has the gold gilt
picture on the front cover.
Both of these editions have the one page preface and
illustrations by van Ingen, Rea and "B”. The titles pages are
identical. Both books are 7.5” x 5.25”.
