Garrigues Brothers, Philadelphia

The firm of J. C. Garrigues was located at 148 S. 4th in Philadelphia. In 1861 it purchased the Sunday School Times from the American Sunday School Union. By sometime in 1862 the company was newly styled as J. C. Garrigues and Company. Beside the book business it was quite active as a carte de visite publisher. In 1868 it relocated to 608 ArchStreet.

In 1872 James C. Garrigues', the senior member of the firm, health had taken a turn for the worse. He had become "impaired by overwork" and was placed in an insane asylum. As he improved, he was allowed visits into the city. During one of these visits he disappeared and was never heard from again.

By 1875 the company was called Garrigues Brothers.

The Garrigues Brothers published one T. S. Arthur title. The first edition of "The Strike at Tivoli Mills" was released in 1879. The book is in wraps. It cost 25 cents and had 147 pages. There are no illustrations. Later in 1879 a cloth covered book was released. It cost 50 cents. With the exception of the covers the books are identical.

It had been previously been published in Arthur's Home magazine in serialized form in 1878.

The copyright is in 1878 but the first edition title page date is 1879.
