D. W. Evans and Company, New York
D. W. Evans and J. H. Preston established the "Pioneer Gift Book
House" at 677 Broadway in 1854. This bookseller and book publisher
advertised a free gift with every purchased book. The gifts consisted
of various gold and silver watches, jewelry, etc.
This publisher used both the Evans & Co. (prior to 1859) and the D.
W. Evans & Co. (1859-1860) imprints. Evans noted in an 1859
advertisement that his company was the oldest house of its type in the
country and that others have taken advantage of the name to compete
unfairly. To lessen confusion its name was changed that year to D. W.
Evans & Co. The main competitor about which he referred to must
have been G. G. Evans of Philadelphia.
This firm printed a number of T. S. Arthur books in the 1858-1860 time
frame although Ten Nights in a Bar-Room was published in 1857 with the
Sartain frontispiece.
The books below are listed in Evans & Co. ads in 1858.
All of the books are priced at $1.00 except as noted below.
Interestingly the same ads appear for books published by J. W. Bradley
and G. G. Evans. Apparently Bradley sold the plates to other firms for
them to sell as their own. Perhaps Bradley actually did the printing
for these firms. Of note is that Bradley ads do appear in the back of
Evans' books.
This most likely is an incomplete list. As more information is
acquitted, the book list will be updated.
I suspect that most of the books below have formats that are the same
as the Bradley books. Check the J. W. Bradley page for more
