Edgewood Publishing Company, Philadelphia

This firm was a subscription book house. It was active from the late 1880’s until 1902. There was a relationship between the Hubbard Brothers and the Edgewood Publishing Company but the details are unknown.

Alfred H. Hubbard, one of the founders of the Hubbard Brothers publishing company, managed Edgewood until his death in 1902. In addition the Edgewood Arthur books have the initials “HB” on the cover. (as do a number of non-Arthur Edgewood books published in the exact same format)

The books:

This publisher printed a number of T. S. Arthur books in its "Edgewood Edition". None were first editions. All twelve volumes were previously published by Hubbard Brothers. Hubbard Brothers printed 13 T. S. Arthur books including Ten Nights in a Bar Room. It is not know whether Edgewood published this latter title.

Details about this set of Arthur books are vague. It appears that these books were published in the 1889 and early 1890's time frame. Copyrights on the Edgewood books have been seen as late as 1888.

Of interest is that this cover format has also been seen with Arthur books published by the Hubbard Brothers, Cottage Library Publishing House and the John W. Lovell Company (without the “HB” initials).
