M. W. Dodd, New York
This firm (succeeded by Dodd and Mead in 1870) published two T.
S. Arthur books. "Wheat-Sheaf, Gathered From Our Own Fields" was
co-authored by F. C. Woodworth and T. S. Arthur. It consists of a
number of short tales written by either one of the authors. This book
is an Arthur first edition. It is 18 mos. and has 288 pages.
A second copy co-published with Hazard and Mitchell, a Philadelphia
publisher, has not been seen.
It was released as a "holiday gift book". One reviewer noted "it is not
a book to amuse only, but to instruct, teaching and illustrating much
valuable truth".
It was copyrighted in 1849 but the only editions have 1850 title page
imprints.
A blind stamped edition without any gilt decoration has been noted.
The contents of this book were reprinted as “The String of Pearls" by
Derby & Miller in 1853 and later by the Burdick Brothers and also
A. B. Burdick.
