James Cephas Derby (1818-1892) was born in Little Falls, New York. After an apprenticeship which began in 1833 with the bookseller Henry Ivison, in 1840 Derby bought his own bookstore in Auburn, New York. He subsequently began publishing in the 1844 time range as J. C. Derby & Company. His clerk, Norman Miller, became his publishing partner in 1848. In 1850 the firm name was changed to Derby & Miller.

Name changes occurred with the addition of William Orton and Eugene Mulligan. In 1853 the successor firms were called Derby & Miller which was located in Auburn and Derby, Orton & Mulligan in Buffalo. With Derby's departure Miller, Orton & Mulligan of Auburn and Buffalo was founded. This firm was active between 1854 and 1857.

Derby founded J. C. Derby and Company in New York City in December, 1853. By 1855 Edwin Jackson joined Derby in a new publishing firm. This firm, Derby and Jackson, was active between 1855 and 1861.

These firms published a number of T. S. Arthur's titles, two of which were first editions.
