Burgess, Stringer & Co., New York

Wesley F. Burgess was a founding partner in 1843 of Burgess & Zeiber, a Philadelphia publisher. After a short stint, later in 1843 Burgess moved to New York to head up the publishing house of Burgess & Stringer. Lawrence R. Fitzgerald and William Brisbane Dick were also part of the management team. By December, 1843 this firm was known as Burgess, Stringer & Co. Located at 222 Broadway, it was active until 1849.

Stringer moved on as Stringer & Townsend while Burgess associated with Ransom Garrett in 1849 to establish Burgess & Garrett. Burgess left this firm in 1850. Of note is that Burgess also was the named partner in Burgess, Taylor & Co., Baltimore (dissolved in 1852) and Wesley Burgess & Co.(1851). Burgess died in 1854 at the age of 44 of cholera. At the time of his death he was associated with Burgess & Day on Nassau Street.

It is unclear if this firm published more than these four T. S. Arthur reprints. All I know presently is that they cost 25 cents. None of these books have been seen and must be considered quite scarce.
