J. W. Bradley, Philadelphia

J. W. Bradley established this namesake publishing firm in Philadelphia in 1847. His establishment sold books mainly by subscription. Bradley published more than forty T. S. Arthur authored books of which a number were first editions. Many of these were co-published with L. P. Crown but there were other companies as well. J. W. Bradley was succeeded by Bradley & Co. in 1864. Bradley sold the T. S. Arthur plates to John E. Potter in 1867 but continued in the publishing business.

Some of the Bradley Arthur books were in series for others were single volumes. Many of the titles were published several times and not infrequently, the cover format was changed yearly.

L. P. Crown, at first in Lowell, Mass. but later in Boston, published most of the Arthur titles that Bradley printed on the Crown imprint. Sometimes Crown noted Bradley as a co publisher just as Bradley had done with Crown. The copyrights however were Bradley’s and not Crown’s. See the Crown section for more information.

Here is the list of the Bradley T. S. Arthur books:

Much of the content of this volume was published previously. I am not certain, but suspect, that none of the vignettes in the book are original to it. This book is a first edition in name only.

Note that by at least 1858 three formats were being published.
Cloth, Full gilt, and antique gilt.

Beginning in 1859 copies of this book were part of the Uniform Edition of the Works of T. S. Arthur.

At least some sections of this book had been previously published in periodicals. Whether the entire content is a republication or not is still a question.

1852 This is the first edition.

I believe that these two books (directly below) were published in 1852 or early 1853. They are both 6.5" x 4.5”. The content is identical (including the back ads). The only difference is the covers. Neither has the typical “Cottage Library” title page and that indicates they were published in 1852 (or very early in 1853). They are both co-published with M. Bradley (at the earlier Chapel Street address).

Editions have been seen with L. P. Crown as well as H. A. Yates/M. Bradley as the co-publishers in addition to being without a co-publisher.

Note that by at least 1858 three formats were being published.
Cloth, Full gilt, and antique gilt.

At least some sections of this book had been previously published in periodicals. Whether the entire content is a republication or not is still a question.

The Cottage Library editions have a mezzotint frontispiece whereas the earlier books have a line drawn engraving as the frontispiece.

1851 First edition
7.5” x 4.5”. 203 pages.
Six illustrations.

This copy of Way to Prosper is undated but it does not have the cottage in gold gilt on the cover indicating it predates the 1853 Cottage Library. (M. Bradley was at 24 High Street by 1854.) I suspect it was the 1852 format.

45. What Can Woman Do?
This title is a J. W. Bradley first edition. There is some confusion about the points. There is an 1855 title page on a L. P. Crown & Co. edition. This must be a misprint however since the copyright in 1856 and the contents first appeared in Arthur’s Home Magazine in 1856. The first edition is a J. W. Bradley volume with an 1856 title page. Known dates that this title was printed by Bradley include 1856, 1857, 1858, 1860, 1865.

Bradley published this title in 1855 on its own imprint as well as with L. P. Crown & Co. and also with H. A.Yates, Auburn, NY/ M. Bradley, New Haven. There is no evidence that it was printed by Bradley in any other year. Muslin. The cover states Arthur's Home Library in embossed letters (1855). Gilt spine. 18 mo.

This is a J. W. Bradley first edition which notes the date on the title page and copyright page as 1857. Editions published by Bradley have been noted in 1857, 1858, 1859, and 1860. The only illustration is the mezzotint frontispiece. 318 pages.

48. Young Lady at Home. Only edition confirmed was published in 1860 although it is likely other later copies were printed.

In 1860 this book was added to the four volume Arthur's Home Library. This volume included three previously published books by T. S. Arthur. This volume is unrelated to the previously published books: A Lady at Home and A Young Lady at Home. It includes these three titles:
1. The Lady at Home
